PHOTOGRAPHY

Courses and Classes

Our hands-on photography workshops will help you stay engaged, keep you photographing and let you improve your skills in a fun and hands-on way. All workshops take place on a Saturday morning for 2 hours, and we hold at least one per month. These workshops are a great way to learn about photography on an ongoing basis. While each workshop is self contained, some build on each other. The greatest benefit is gained by participating in all of them. - Of course.

Using Your On-Camera Flash

Mastery

Using Your On-Camera Flash

Using your on-camera flash sometimes befuddles even professional photographers. In this workshop we will study and apply how to use your on-camera flash for most situations you may encounter. We’ll also look at how to use it to get you pleasing photos, without that flash look. And then, we'll talk about ways to use your on-camera flash creatively for interesting and perhaps unexpected effects.

What we’ll do:

• How to set your camera for on-camera flash

Because an on-camera flash illuminates only a small part of the scene in front your camera, it can impact your metering and camera settings. Results can be unpredictable if you don't know how to take that into account. After this workshop, you will.

• How to set your flash

You might expect this would be a simple case of on-or-off. But there's a bit more to it than that.

• How to use your flash as the main light source

It is possible, with the proper technique, to use your on-camera flash as the main light source for a photo, and still get pleasing results. If you've ever been frustrated because your photos are ok, but all have that harshly-lit flash look to them, we can help.

• How to use fill flash

We'll talk about how to read the light to determine if fill flash will help you get the photo you want, and then we'll show you how to use it properly.

• How to use flash exposure compensation

Flash exposure compensation allows you to adjust the power of the flash unit. You may need to do this under certain circumstances to make the light from the flash complement the external light, rather than overpowering it. We'll tell you how to know when - and why - you might want to do this.

• How to drag the shutter

There are times when lowering your shutter speed, even in a low light situation, is what you need or want to do. We'll show you how to use your on-camera flash in these circumstances for beautiful results.
